Strength & Struggle

For some of us, it is easier to focus on our strengths. For others, we can’t see past all of our struggle to discover our strengths. But to overcome our struggle and thrive in our strengths, we have to acknowledge and accept both sides of the coin.

Many times, our greatest strengths are coupled with our greatest struggles.

For me, one of my biggest struggles is that I tend to be a perfectionist. For a long time this manifested itself as a strict rule follower which lead to a lot of guilt. It also made others feel judged if they didn’t measure up to the standard I set for myself. I never intended to judge others, in fact, I thought that I was extending grace, but my expectation for myself spilled over to others. The strength in this characteristic is that I value hard work and doing things with excellence.

We all have qualities and characteristics that can be strengths or struggles. If we never discover the strength in them, it is hard to overcome the struggle of them. On the flip side, if we never acknowledge the struggle in them, it will be difficult to access their full strength and great potential.
